How the Vulcan flew
The Vulcan is a large, four-engined jet that happened to have no tailplane. It took off like a bomber, cruised like a high-altitude liner with a military heart-rate, and approached with a delta’s nose-high attitude that still startles people watching film of XH558. Understanding how it flew makes the radar story clearer: the sensors were fitted to an aeroplane with a particular envelope, not to a generic “bomber.”
Power
Bristol (later Bristol Siddeley, later Rolls-Royce) Olympus turbojets defined the type. Early B.1 engines were modest by later standards; the B.2’s Olympus 201 and 301 produced the thrust that made Blue Steel and high-level dash realistic. The famous howl — a siren-like note on approach — is a compressor/intake phenomenon that display crowds treated as the aircraft’s voice. It is not a siren fitted for effect. It is the engine installation talking.
The two-pilot deck
Two pilots sat on Martin-Baker ejection seats. The captain flew; the co-pilot was a fully occupied second pilot, not a passenger. High-altitude jet bombing in the 1950s was still a new trade. The view from the flight deck is panoramic by bomber standards and useless for reading a map of the target: that work happened behind them.
The three in the back
Navigator Radar, Navigator Plotter and AEO sat at rear-facing stations with no ejection seats. Escape was through the crew entrance in the nose, a grim procedure at low level. That inequality of survival equipment is part of the type’s moral history and is not softened by airshow gloss. It also explains the culture of the rear cabin: a tightly bound team running radar and electronics while the pilots flew the headings.
Delta manners
A pure delta generates lift with attitude. On the approach the nose sits high; the pilots see runway through a different geometry from a Hunter or a Canberra. Elevators (elevons) and a large rudder do the control work that a tailplane would do on a conventional bomber. High-altitude, high-Mach behaviour was the original design point; low-level turbulence was a later imposition the airframe only partly enjoyed. More on the wing itself is in The delta wing explained.

Numbers on preserved-aircraft plaques disagree by a few percent. Treat them as order-of-magnitude truth. The flying truth is simpler: a very large wing, four thirsty jets, and a crew of five sharing one radar war.
